Praxair® JP-5000
Thermal Spray Coating, HVOF Equipment

The TAFA JP-5000 uses an elegantly simple and effective design to produce High Pressure HVOF (HP/HVOF) coatings of incomparable quality. Coating benefits include:
•   High and controllable coating density
•   High and controllable coating hardness
•   High bond strength (test adhesive fails before coating)
•   Coating thickness exceeding 1/2" (12.7 mm)
•   Smoother as-sprayed finish In addition to the outstanding coating quality, the JP-5000 delivers spray rates four times higher than typical HVOF systems.

This dramatic increase in spray rate and productivity places the JP-5000 HP/HVOF system in a new category of HVOF equipment: High Pressure HVOF. Coating Quality is #1 Nothing is more important in an HVOF system than the quality of the coating it produces. The JP-5000 has been developed and refined to produce the absolute best coating quality. A basic rule for coating quality is: High Combustion Pressure = High Gas Velocity = High Particle Velocity = High Coating Quality. The JP-5000 is the embodiment of this rule:

it has the highest combustion pressure, so it delivers the highest quality coatings. A key benefit to the high particle velocities generated by the JP-5000 is the extremely high coating density and low oxide content. Low oxide content is simply due to the particles having less time in the atmosphere to oxidize. The high velocity also packs the particles more tightly, reducing porosity and creating a denser coating. This is especially beneficial in corrosion resistance applications where a denser barrier is needed and when grinding, where high density coatings produce a finer finish. Perhaps the most striking example of the JP-5000's coating properties is the fact that it sprays coatings exceeding 1/2" (12.7 mm) thick while maintaining high bond strengths and coating densities. That's because the exceptionally high particle velocities of the JP-5000 produce coatings in compression, compared with other HVOF systems which produce coatings in tension. Tension produced coatings begin to fail as thins as 0.040" (1 mm). One of the key factors in the JP-5000's coating quality is the heating consistency of the powder as it exits the gun. The radial powder injection design of the JP-5000 heats the powder uniformly. Independent laboratory tests have shown the JP-5000 WC-Co (Tungsten Carbide Cobalt) and CrC -- NiCr (Chromium Carbide -- Nickel Chromium) coatings have superior wear resistance -- in some cases 1/3 the wear of other HVOF and detonation gun coatings. Competing processes have not been able to equal this unique property. This consistency also improves bond strength and overall coating quality.

Safer Operation
The JP-5000 runs on kerosene or the equivalent. Generally, for maximum performance, other HVOF systems us hydrogen, potentially a very dangerous gas. The JP-5000 delivers peak performance without resorting to expensive, hard to handle gases. Consider the fact that kerosene is safe enough to be used in the heating of millions of homes. The JP-5000 is a very safe choice for HP/HVOF coatings.

The Economical Solution
A big plus for the JP-5000 is operating economy. It saves money in several ways. Fuel costs are lower, as kerosene is generally available for less than propylene or hydrogen. The spray rate of the JP-5000 can be as high as 20 pounds (9.1 kg) per hour, so you put down more coating in less time. Importantly, coating quality is not affected at the higher spray rates. Typical deposition rates of 0.001" (.025 mm) per pass build up your coating at rates exceeding two times those of other HVOF systems. That helps you turn around parts more quickly, with less labor and waste.

The JP-5000 HP/HVOF gun is engineered
to deliver maximum coating quality and reliability in the field.

HP/HVOF Gun
The JP-5000 HP/HVOF gun is the heart of the system. Extensive engineering effort has gone into the development and testing of this unit. The result is a unique design that delivers significantly better coatings. Central to the design is its radial powder injection. The powder is injected downstream of the combustion nozzle. Injection into this lower pressure area promotes better powder mixing, more even heating, less oxidizing and more uniform, higher particle velocities. The particles impact with a kinetic energy and have a lower, but more consistent temperature compared to other HVOF guns.

The JP-5000's unique combustion design generates an exceptionally high combustion pressure of up to 120 PSIG (8.2 bar) (vs. 30 - 60 PSIG (2 - 4 bar) in other HVOFs) and superior gas velocities (7,200 fps (2,190 m/sec) for JP-5000 vs. 4,800-5,900 fps (1,460-1,800 m/sec) in others). This translates into higher coating hardness and better coating integrity. These design features allow powders with a larger particle size to be used. In many cases, this can decrease the powder cost when compared with systems that require smaller particle sizes. A key benefit to using larger particle sizes is that the larger particles have less surface area, a fact that reduces oxidation and produces less oxygen in the coating. Efficient water-cooling allows operation for extended periods, increasing up time. Unlike some HVOF's, the temperature of the cooling water is not a critical factor of coating quality.

JP-5000ST Gun
The JP-5000ST Small Target gun is a JP-5000 spray system enhancement option that dramatically increases the target efficiency by 40% over the standard JP-5000 on targets smaller than the spray stream width. It is specially designed to produce a concentrated spray pattern for the application of coatings on small parts, on highly defined target areas, or where application space limitations are tight. The high velocity, tightly focused spray pattern produces excellent coatings and substantial savings in operating costs when spraying small parts. With the higher target efficiency, savings of 25 --50 percent on material costs can be realized. Given that powder is typically greater than 65% of the total hourly spray cost, every opportunity must be taken to minimize this cost. Use of the JP-5000ST gun will also reduce operating costs of the JP-5000 system. Fuel and oxygen consumption is reduced by over 40% to approximately 3.0 GPH ((11.4 LPH) and 1000 SCFH (28,300 LPH) respectively.
